Accessible Affirmations

I am valuable.

That is it. Right there is an affirmation that you can use when you are doubting yourself. There are many things that we may need reminders of throughout our day when our confidence is low. Using affirmations is a good start to moving from self-doubt to self-confidence.

The trouble is, sometimes our self-esteem is so low that we do not believe the words or even have the ability to create an affirmation in the heat of the self-questioning moment. Here are some important tips on how to create an affirmation, when to use affirmations, and how to go from ignoring to believing them:

  1. Affirmations should (for the most part) be written in “I statements” and in a positive format. (i.e. “I am beautiful” is a better affirmation than “I am not ugly.”)

  2. Affirmations should be relatively brief and memorable. (i.e. “I am kind to others.”)

  3. Affirmations do not have to be “flowery” and excessively positive. They may simply be rational and realistic. (i.e. “I can manage the challenges ahead of me.)

  4. When confidence is very low, it helps to have some affirmations at the ready, especially ones that target a specific repetitive negative statement or a broad one that can help in many situations. (i.e. My wants and needs are valid.)

  5. Practicing affirmations throughout the day can help it become more natural and normalized, such as regularly starting the day with a positive affirmation, repeating it at lunch time, when commuting to work, etc.

  6. Writing out or creating regular reminders of your affirmations can help them become more normal, such as writing them on Post-it notes and leaving them on your bathroom mirror or refrigerator, setting reminders on your phone with affirmations, or making your favorite affirmation your computer screen saver.

  7. At first, you may not believe in the affirmations, especially when you have been operating on negative self-talk for a long time. The more you practice the positive affirmations, the more natural and believable they will become.
